The Suttas – The Buddhist “Holy Book” or Sacred Text. When people first come to investigate Buddhism, they may wonder if there is a Buddhist holy book or something like a Buddhist Bible. In Buddhism, there are a set of canonical teachings known as . For a modern reader, some of the least appealing passages in the Sutta Nipāta concern the brahmanical view that there were 32 marks to look for in a great man—one who would either become a universal monarch or a Rightly Self-Awakened One—and the corresponding Buddhist assertion that the Buddha was endowed with all 32 marks. The Sutta-nipāta, being a collection of some of Gotama Buddha's dialogues and discourses. IntroductioN to The Sutta-Nipata. T HE Collection of Discourses, Sutta-Nipāta, which I have here translated, [] is very remarkable, as there can be no doubt that it contains some remnants of Primitive Buddhism.

I consider the greater part of the Mahāvagga, and nearly the whole of the Aṭṭhakavagga as very old. I have arrived at this conclusion from two reasons, first from the language. The Sutta Nipāta (lit. 'Section of the Suttas') is a Buddhist scripture, a sutta collection in the Khuddaka Nikaya, part of the Pali Canon of Theravada Buddhism.

All its suttas, thought to originate from before the Buddha's parinibbana, consist largely of verse, though some also contain some prose. The Buddhist tradition believes that all the three groups represent “the word of the Buddha”; however, modern scholarship shows that many texts belonging to the Canon are of later origin.

The Sutta-nipata (Sutta-nipaata) is one of the oldest canonical texts, belonging to the Suttapitaka, the collection of Buddha’s discourses.

Tamara Ditrich. The Sutta Nipata ("The Sutta Collection"), the fifth book of the Khuddaka Nikaya, consists of 71 short suttas divided into five vaggas (chapters).

A complete translation of the Sutta Nipāta, Sutta Nipāta: The Discourse Group,by Thanissaro Bhikkhu, is distributed free of charge by Metta Forest is also available to read online and in various ebook formats at Dialogues of the Buddha {The Dîgha-Nikâya} Translated from the Pâli by T.

Rhys Davids London, H. Frowde, Oxford University Press [] Vol. II of The Sacred Books of the Buddhists. The Sutta Nipāta—the Discourse Group—is the fifth text in the Khuddaka Nikāya, or Short Collection, which in turn is the fifth collection in the Sutta Piṭaka of the Pali Canon.

The collection totals 72 suttas in all, arranged in five chapters, and includes some of the most famous poems in the Pali Canon, such as the Discourse on. The Sutta-Nipāta contains some of the oldest discourses in the Pali Canon.

It is a rich source of texts offering guidance to lay Buddhists and also abounds in suttas that extol the contemplative ideals of early Buddhism. Though the Sutta-Nipāta as a collection exists only in the Theravada tradition, some of the individual suttas are found in.

An old piece of information known to me but unfortunately forgotten probably a few minutes after it was first read, has just returned to consciousness from my giving a re-reading to Rhys Davids, Buddhist India, pg. There Rhys Davids points out that the term 'Suttanta' means 'end of the suttas' in our sense of 'the aim' or 'a summary', that is, compiled from smaller suttas.
